Women rights in India
India is a democratic country. Democratic country means government is run by the people and for the people. Every citizen of India is provided with seven basic fundamental rights like right to speech, right to information, right to vote etc. some special rights are given to women in India but there are many women who are unaware of their rights.
During the medieval period condition of women was deterioted. At that time women were considered inferior to men and many evil practices were imposed on them. Dowry system was one such evil practice in which a girl was married only when her parents were capable of giving a large amount of money to her in-laws. Now also in some places this system is going on. Many girls and women are unaware that dowry system was prohibited by the government in 1961 and if anyone has been accused of taking dowry then he will be a subject of punishment.
Eve teasing is like another dangerous insect which is eating up our society. Often we hear cases of eve teasing. Government of India has given every girl/women the right to complain about eve teasing. Victims who are subjected to this type of crime can take recourse in court. The person being accused is punished by imprisonment, fines or both.
Daily we hear many cases of wife being physically and mentally harassed. Many victims suffer all this because they are unaware that in 1983 government has given them the right of anti cruelty statute according to which a wife can protest against her cruel husband and send him behind the bars.
In Islam five primary rights are given to every woman. They are: a women is free to choose her life partner, if her husband is cruel to her then she can leave her, a widow is allowed to marry again without her family permission, she has an equal right on the property of her father, husband or son and she has the full right to keep the money which she earns.
Another important right given to women by the government is right to vote. In many villages it is seen that women are not allowed to give vote and if they are allowed to do so they have to vote for that person only which her husband and family has voted.

Government of India has started many schemes and policies for the empowerment of women. Many NGOs are also working in India which are making women aware of their rights and making India a more safe place for women
